n New York, officials say a child died after contracting measles, making it the state's first such fatality in more than 30 years.

The unvaccinated, 7-month-old child died in a rural area north of Syracuse, though no other details have been provided.

The CDC recommends that children get their first immunization against measles starting around 12 months. In October, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency due to rising cases in the state and in neighboring Pennsylvania.

So far this year, the CDC has reported more than 4,800 measles cases nationwide, more than twice as many as in 2025.
