Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers to win Michigan's open Senate seat. He'll be the first Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate.

"They tried to confuse you, so let me just set the record straight," El-Sayed said during his victory speech early Wednesday.

"I love America," he said. "I know exactly what America gave to me."

The former public health official, who lost his bid in the state's 2018 gubernatorial primary, beat out party-backed Rep. Haley Stevens this summer in the Democratic primary.
