For more than 1,600 straight days, Sri Lanka's war widows have staged a "march for justice", calling for answers to what happened to their husbands, fathers and brothers who vanished during the country's civil war. Between 1983 and 2009, over 100,000 people were killed, including many civilians, according to UN estimates. Tens of thousands also disappeared, were abducted, tortured or killed by security forces or the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). "What keeps us continuing is the space that this has created to talk about history... to talk about injustice, and also to keep asking questions," says Sarala Emmanuel, one of the most regular marchers and a campaigner.
