Nine people were shot, one fatally, near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday night after the Magic City Classic college football game, police said.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett told a press conference that one person died, one was in critical condition and seven others were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers recovered multiple firearms from the scene, he said.
One person was detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, Pickett said, adding that police were working with the FBI and other agencies.
Pickett called the violence “senseless,” saying it happened after the game and mostly off stadium property, though in an area where vendors were set up.
"The fact of the matter is, this was two senseless acts of violence, completely senseless acts of violence. This is something that we not only just see here in Birmingham, but we see it all over the nation," Pickett said.
