The midterm results are still taking shape, with razor-thin races in Alaska and Mississippi potentially reshaping the political map.
The results come after major upsets across Republican strongholds and a campaign in which President Donald Trump put himself at the centre of the midterm fight.
“When you’re polling at 35 per cent, you simply do not want to be going around and being involved in congressional races,” Nathaniel Birkhead from Kansas State University said.
“For the MAGA base, the question is what will they do without Donald Trump? He needs to designate a successor, and they will probably follow that successor. They will not follow the successor with the same sort of vigour that they have followed Donald Trump.”
As Reggie Cecchini reports, the results are raising questions about the future of the Republican Party and Trump’s influence over the MAGA movement.
