Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has become the first Muslim elected senator in U.S. history, winning the Michigan Senate race.
“To the super PACs and special interests who tried to beat us, we are coming for your system of politics. To AIPAC, who spent 42 million dollars against us, thank you for giving me the opportunity to beat you twice,” El-Sayed said in his victory speech early Wednesday morning.
His opponent, Mike Rogers, entered the race with Donald Trump’s support and sought to falsely portray El-Sayed as a religious extremist.
