Pte. Shaun Farrell, who was killed in the CFB Wainwright fire in Alberta on Oct. 17, 2026, has been laid to rest in his home of Prince Albert, Sask.
A full military funeral took place Wednesday morning, where Pte. Farrell was honoured by friends and loved ones, as well as representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe.
There were several heartfelt references to Shaun's life motto: "comfort kills dreams." Reflecting on the quote, LCol. James Cressall, the commanding officer of the battalion that Farrell was a part of, said, "I think those words tell us a great deal about Shaun. Shaun understood that worthwhile things rarely come easily. He wasn't content to settle for what was comfortable. He sought to challenge himself to improve and to see what he was capable of achieving."
Shaun's friend, Pte. Luke Jessiman: said, "We're here not just to honour a soldier; but to remember a friend, a brother, and someone who left a mark on my life and so many others, that time will never erase... He was courageous, loyal, determined, and willing to put his brothers to his left and right before himself."
Heloise Vermeulan, a family friend, offered remarks on behalf of Shaun Farrell’s mother: "My boys have always been my whole world. And a piece of my life, my soul, went with you. I salute your courage, your strength, and determination. From the day you were born, I knew you were destined to make a difference,” she said.
To conclude the service, pallbearer's escorted Shaun's casket outside to his favourite song 'Black Betty,' as per the family's request.
