Following weeks of speculation, Prime Minister Mark Carney and officials from the European Union (EU) have expanded upon what Canada becoming the first-ever “associate member” of the alliance might entail.

Immediately after signing several agreements aimed at strengthening economic and technological cooperation in Montreal on Friday, Carney — alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa — touched on the matter, vowing it would bring “more opportunity, greater affordability” and “deeper sovereignty” for both sides.

Acknowledging hesitation from European Parliament members about the “uncharted territory” of associate membership, von der Leyen assured reporters Canada and the EU will “build a partnership that comes closer to membership than anything we've done before — with three clear objectives: more opportunities for our people; more prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic; and greater security for all.”

“Canada is the most European country outside Europe. Because what brings us together goes far beyond geography. We see the world through the same eyes,” the EU chief added.

Though negotiations on this supposed “alliance for the future” are set to conclude in June, Carney and von der Leyen spoke about other agreements established that will cover investments, supercomputing, space cooperation and expansive student exchange programs and research opportunities.
