Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed visits a polling station in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Republicans are more hopeful about flipping an open seat in Michigan as Democratic divisions have persisted in what could be the tightest race for a Democratic-held Senate seat this year.
Progressive outsider Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated moderate US Representative Haley Stevens during the primary. She turned the race on its head over the weekend with a surprise endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers, a former US representative.
