The SIU (Special Investigations Unit) — Ontario’s police watchdog — is investigating after a 19-year-old was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot inside a student residence at the University of Toronto, Mississauga Campus, on Monday night.
The university issued a shelter-in-place order for students near McLuhan Court, a residence complex housing hundreds of first-year students, while police responded.
Investigators believe the suspect, who wasn’t a student, was visiting someone he knew, Peel Regional Police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said on Tuesday. The relationship between the two wasn’t immediately clear.
