Geoffrey Hinton: Your Chatbot Already Has Subjective Experience

Watch this video on YouTube ↗
Neil deGrasse Tyson, with co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O'Reilly, asks Geoffrey Hinton whether consciousness emerges once a neural network gets complex enough. Hinton calls consciousness-as-magic-essence the "phlogiston" of cognitive science and argues that subjective experience is just a way of describing how your perception is misleading you. Using a thought experiment with a multimodal chatbot whose camera is fooled by a prism, he makes the case that such a chatbot already has subjective experience, which Neil calls a consciousness Turing test. Hinton also expects AI to surpass humans one domain at a time, eventually even in coming up with new scientific theories.
