In this video I build a complete tune from a single sound: a shimmery, colorful keyboard patch. The idea starts with an Abmajor9 chord with the third in the bass. Instead of inventing new ideas, I let each sound lead to the next. I find the chord progression by following the melody (Bmajor13#11, Bb7, Amaj7 and more), then set it in rhythm at 150 BPM. From there I expand the sketch into a 16-bar A section and a 16-bar B section, vary the chords with each repetition, and set up solo sections with voicings that leave room for a soloist. I experiment and tighten the form by cutting redundant sections, and resolve Bb7 to Eb for the outro before building an intro out of the B-section chords. Along the way I talk about why I capture and shape an idea quickly, while the clay is still soft, so the first sketch already has the makings of a whole tune. It all ends with a full playback of the finished piece.
