DOJ to Washington: Set aside alleged noncitizen ballots

Watch this video on YouTube ↗
The Trump administration has demanded that Washington state election officials set aside ballots from more than 400 voters that it says might not be U.S. citizens.

The Justice Department said the people identified represent just the tip of the iceberg, even though evidence shows noncitizen voting is exceedingly rare. Washington’s secretary of state said he was reviewing the DOJ request.

This is the third time this month that the Trump administration has tried to involve itself in ballot counting and certification, following a similar effort in California and a separate legal challenge in Alaska.

The counting and certification of votes are responsibilities assigned to state and local election officials under state and federal law.
