Prices are high this Halloween — between candy, decorations and costumes, the National Retail Federation finds Americans will spend an average of about $115 on Halloween this year. But what’s scary is how fast they'll haunt a landfill.

"We're spending billions on something we wear for one night and creating all of this waste," says Lexy Silverstein, a sustainable fashion advocate in California. "Most costumes are made from polyester, which is basically plastic" that breaks down, polluting the environment. Silverstein started the Ultimate Halloween Swap, recycling hundreds of costumes last year in LA and Baltimore. "This is about communities helping each other, and if there isn't a swap near you, start one."
