Patrick Stewart died Wednesday at the age of 86 after what’s described as “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.” Stewart spent his career charting the future: He played mutant leader Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series and Captain Jean-Luc Picard in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
Stewart was trained as a Shakespearean actor. He brought that gravitas to all of his roles, along with a playful sense of purpose. He was also a domestic violence prevention advocate. Patrick Stewart was knighted in 2010 for his service to drama.
