A new report from BC Hydro is highlighting the way wildfire and prolonged heat in the summer can leave behind risks that make fall and winter storms more damaging.
The report underscores the fact that emergency season is a year-round reality with the line between wildfire and storm season fading.
BC Hydro spokesperson Whitney Deane says trees weakened by drought or wildfire are vulnerable when high winds and heavy rain arrive.
Deane stresses the importance of having a 72-hour emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries and first-aid supplies – to be prepared for the possibility of power outages.
To prepare for storm season, BC Hydro says it tripled annual vegetation management, spending up to $150 million to remove hazardous trees and vegetation near power lines.
