These homemade cookies use chocolate chopped from a bar, giving you irregular pieces of chocolate throughout the dough. Toasted walnuts add flavor and crunch, while the finished cookies have the combination of crisp edges and a softer middle that Jeffrey remembered from childhood.
Renee shows you how to prepare the walnuts and chocolate, mix and chill the cookie dough, portion the cookies, and judge the bake so the edges are set while the centers remain soft. Follow the complete recipe from preparing the ingredients to pulling a batch from your own oven.
The recipe began with a request from Jeffrey, who remembered eating La Cookie at Hudson’s department stores around Detroit. More than forty years later, he still wanted another taste.
Could we recreate the cookie he remembered?
With help from Hudson’s historian Bruce Allen Kopytek, we examined surviving advertisements, a handwritten recipe and an old ingredient label. Those clues helped Renee develop our reconstruction of Hudson’s La Cookie. If you are a Hudson’s Fan be sure to check out the WDIV documentary. It is outstanding.
The search also brought us back to the people and family traditions that made a trip to Hudson’s worth remembering.
Did you ever eat La Cookie? Do you remember the chocolate, the walnuts or that combination of soft and crisp? Tell us what you remember in the comments.
