Nenshi confronts Danielle Smith after leaked texts suggest she offered guidance to separatists

NDP opposition leader Naheed Nenshi confronted Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Wednesday on whether she coordinated with separatist leaders prior to the referendum vote.
“We introduced changes to the referendum legislation shortly after the federal election was over in April of 2025. So there was a period of time where the old rules applied while we were writing the regulations, and from time-to-time people would ask me, if they were interested in putting petitions forward, at what point the new rules would apply… and yeah, I answered some questions at that time.” Smith said.
Nenshi then read aloud leaked text messages between Danielle Smith and separatist leader Jeffrey Rath - posted to social media by Rath - that Nenshi claimed showed Smith “was instructing Jeffrey Rath on how to handle his referendum, his petition and the timing.”
“Quote ‘I told you (Jeffrey Rath) and Mitch (Sylvestre) to wait until your new rules come in’ end quote, that is not answering a question, and no Albertan would believe that. That is the premier, in writing, telling the separatists that she changed the law for them and telling them how to manage their separatist position for maximum success.” Nenshi said.
