Residents of Arab capitals across the Middle East expressed doubt that Israel’s election results would create positive change for the region on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday morning, 77.6 per cent of votes had been tallied in total, with Israeli media forecasting incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc of right-wing, far-right and ultra-Orthodox partis winning 54 seats in parliament; surpassing 49 for the rival Gadi Eisenkot’s opposition bloc.

“Whoever wins, nothing will change for us, because both parties, have similar policies,” one Damascus resident said.

Tuesday’s election was the first held in Israel since Hamas-led fighters killed 1,200 people and carried off 251 hostages in attacks that shattered the country's sense of security and plunged it into war in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
