President Trump’s envoy is calling Russian president Vladimir Putin a “humanitarian” after Russia released an American man who was captured by Russia in Ukraine. Trump says he asked Putin to release Stephen Hubbard, who returned to the U.S. this morning.
President Trump says he gave nothing in exchange for Hubbard’s release, but the news came soon after Trump made a diesel deal with Russia and waived sanctions. He faces pushback from many in Washington, including Republicans, who say Trump should be putting more pressure on Russia.
Hubbard, a retired teacher, was living in Eastern Ukraine when Russia invaded and captured him, accusing him of being a mercenary. The US considered him a hostage.
