California Governor Gavin Newsom has just commuted the sentences of all 548 prisoners on the state’s death row. That’s about a quarter of all death sentences in the country.
The sentences will now become life without parole, though many will require additional review. Clemency requests for those with more than one felony conviction must be approved by the California Supreme Court .
In an open letter to all Californians, Newsom called the move one of the most difficult decisions of his career but said, “we cannot execute people in our imperfect legal system and remain true to our core values, first among them justice and human decency.”
Newsom has two months left in office and the move comes as he considers a potential presidential run.
California has not executed anyone since 2006.
