Only 65 of 5,522 Medicare Advantage Plans Have Enrollment Caps
There is a lot of "BREAKING NEWS" right now about Medicare Advantage enrollment caps for 2027 — the idea that plans will be first-come, first-served and you might find the plan you want is sold out by the time you meet with your agent.
It's technically correct. It's also almost certainly not about you.
Enrollment caps are not new. What's different for 2027 is that they're formally organized under CMS rules and were submitted during the bid process. That structure comes with protections: a plan must keep accepting people until the cap is reached, it cannot remove existing members to make room, and it cannot cherry-pick healthier enrollees.
Here's the actual scope. There are 5,522 Medicare Advantage plans available nationwide for 2027. The average beneficiary can choose from about 35 of them. Capped plans exist in 11 states, across 15 insurance companies, totaling 65 plans — roughly 1% of what's available.
In this video I go state by state, company by company, with the actual cap numbers, so you can tell in about four minutes whether any of this applies to you. Then I'll tell you why I think enrollment caps, as much as I dislike them, are the more honest tool compared to the alternative insurance companies usually reach for.
