Palestinian families in the West Bank have been unable to harvest their olive groves for years amid growing settler violence and restrictions on access to their land. With the help of Israeli and American rabbis and other activists, families returned to harvest their olives.

U.S. Democratic congressional candidate Brad Lander was detained along with about 80 American and Israeli rabbis and activists by Israeli security forces, as the U.S. and Israeli delegation was helping Palestinians harvest olives from their grove close to a settlement in the occupied West Bank.

Lander and most of the activists were later released.

But this comes amid a spate of escalating attacks in the occupied West Bank by settlers, including against an American photojournalist with the Washington Post last week and an attack on European diplomats the following day.

Two Israeli lawyers tell NPR this mass detention in the occupied West Bank is the largest of its kind in at least a decade.
