The leader of a Kenyan doomsday cult linked to the deaths of hundreds of people was sentenced to 200 years in prison.
The High Court in Kenya's coastal city of Mombasa issued the sentence on Friday for Pastor Paul Mackenzie, who was convicted of murdering 190 children and one adult after he ordered his followers to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus.
Judge Diana Kavedza-Mochache said, "The survivors testified that deaths at Shakahola were celebrated as weddings to Jesus, with the deceased regarded as heroes of faith."
"A death sentence may be perceived not as punishment, but as a triumph and a form of martyrdom... Particularly where the convicts regard death as a pathway to heaven and reunion with Jesus and their deceased children," the judge said.
The cult leader's son, Dan Mackenzie, attended the sentencing and said, "They got justice, the victims and people who have lost their lives and people who lost their family members, their loved ones."
