The City of Vancouver has come down hard on a landlord who turned an East Vancouver single-family home into a rooming house with 17 tenants.
A $90,000 fine was issued to the owners of the property at 1654 East Pender St. near Hastings and Commercial.
An inspection by the Compliance and Enforcement Residential Tenancy Branch found the home, built in 1915, was approved as a single-family dwelling with a secondary suite but was altered to have approximately 21 sleeping rooms.
A report found the rental property was not maintained in compliance with health, safety, and housing standards as required by law. An Order to Vacate was also issued.
