Sen. Thom Tillis, R-NC, says the "lack of a feedback loop" between the Republican-controlled Congress and the Trump administration concerns him as voters cast their ballots in the midterm elections.
"We got a little bit ahead of our blockers," he said. "The voters can only absorb so much change over a period of time, and I think we exceeded their capacity. That's part of what's driving people to the polls."
Tillis told PBS News Hour's Geoff Bennett that Congress should have stopped the One Big Beautiful Bill from passing with the health care provisions.
"You're already seeing the narrative that the health care portion of the bill was the problematic portion that I believe was going to cause some headwinds in this cycle, even more in the 2028 cycle," he said.
He said Republicans also "lost the narrative" with the war in Iran, saying Americans are only thinking about how much it costs to "fill up their gas tank."
"We needed an after-action, and we should have pressed on either the war powers resolution or very clear communication to Congress sooner," he said.
Tillis spoke to Bennett on Friday about his new book, “How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents.”
