Von der Leyen speaks on Canada becoming 1st “associate member” despite EU dropping designation

European Union (EU) leaders are gathering in Montreal starting Thursday, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussing a closer relationship with Canada.

Opening the summit in Montreal, the EU chief said: “First, it means close alignment on policies. We can work on everything from AI and climate to energy and security. You just name it. Second, it means close alignment on governance. It means more work shared by the European Commission and the Canadian government… I can think of no better partner than Canada to embark exactly on this journey with us.”

Despite a recently proposed “associate membership” for Canada being rejected by some European leaders, von der Leyen kept that phrasing in her speech – without acknowledging the recent pushback – calling the developing relationship an “alliance for the future.”

Though that hybrid EU membership is seemingly off the table, officials on both sides say they’re looking at ways to forge closer ties in the business, tech, clean energy and critical minerals fields – something Prime Minister Mark Carney has been pursuing for months.

The speech comes before a press conference by Carney and a roundtable that will include the two leaders and President of the European Council António Costa.
