The Marine Education & Research Society says a whale has been found dead along the Sunshine Coast of B.C. The deceased humpback whale is believed to be the same mammal struck by a BC Ferries vessel, but authorities were unable to identify the whale when the incident happened earlier this month.

Caitlin Birdsall with the Marine Education & Research Society said, "While we can not say for certain that the deceased whale is the same whale that was struck. It's in the same area and of course around the same timeline – so, it is quite likely."

The whale surfaced near Gambier Island, floating belly up with no fluke or visible dorsal fin. An expert used markings to identify it as 'Notcho,' a male humpback that has frequented the Salish Sea for the past decade.

Joel Voyer, a local kayaker said, "We are just heartbroken about what we just saw today; it was just horrible... If there is a way to prevent it that would be great; going slower, paying attention, whatever they can do."

Kylie Stanton has the details.
