Poilievre condemns Liberals’, Carney’s “Make America Great Again” fuel tax

Canada’s federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre aimed Prime Minister Mark Carney during Question Period Wednesday, criticizing the ruling Liberal government for not being self-sufficient in petroleum products.

“More than half of Canada's biofuels are imported predominantly from the United States. So, the government of Canada forces the people of Canada to pay 16 cents a litre more to buy American biofuels. Why?” Poilievre queried.

Despite being present in the House of Commons, Carney did not answer this question. Instead, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Canada “has the strongest fiscal position in the G7,” adding that the government is “investing to be an energy superpower” to help “build Canada strong.”

This was echoed later by Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, to which Poilievre replied, “No, he [Carney] wants to build America strong.”

The opposition leader continued: “Now, at the Trump Tower, they will be popping the champagne today, knowing that this government is defending a 16-cent-a-litre tax that sends Canadian money south of the border to subsidize large U.S. corporations selling us overpriced biofuels… The prime minister has a ‘Make America Great Again’ tax at the pump.”
